Grand Houses Tour Notes

ARCHITECTURAL STYLES

The houses on this tour the Victorian mansions of the city. All derive from the high style popular at the end of the nineteenth century: Eastlake, Italianate, Shingle, Craftsman, Moorish, and the Classical, Romanesque and Colonial Revivals. Some of the most ornate fenestration to be found in Provo is contained in these buildings.

Victorian Era • 1837-1901
Asymmetry; intricate details; steep, gabled roofs; bay windows

Romanesque Revival • 1840 – early 1900’s
Pronounced round arches; heavy stone/brick; round towers; squat columns

Italianate • 1840-1890
Projecting balconies; low-pitched roof; wide overhanging eaves; decorative eave brackets; tall narrow windows forms.

English Tudor • 1890-1940
Steeply pitched gable roofs, gangs of small leaded-glass windows, possibly with geometric patterns, and half-timbered facades

Classical Revival • 1895-1950
Symmetrical, pediments above windows/doors, prominent columns.
Emphasizes formality, order, democracy, and simplicity.

Craftsman • 1900-1930
Low-pitch roof, wide overhanging eaves, exposed timbers, natural materials, built-in furniture, extensive woodwork.
Brings informality, human craftsmanship, nature, and value of human soul.
